Since 1994 the James River Film Festival has presented over 500 programs and 150 guest filmmakers , critics , musicians and artist and the 24th edition is proud to announce the participation of director Guy Maddin ( Tales of Gimli Hospital , Archangel , My Winnipeg , Brand Upon the Brain , Forbidden Room). Mr. Maddin’s style and unique vision have often drawn the “cult director ” tag , but his filmic world is a singular and personal as that of Luis Bunuel , Werner Herzog , or David Lynch.
More special guest include directors Herb E. Smith ( The Ralph Stanley Story) , Michele Poulos ( A Late Style of Fire ), Chris Kirkley ( Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Rain in it), and premiere screenings of The Sad and Beautiful World of Sparklehorse , The Very Best of Rural Route , Between Dog and Wolf : The New Model Army Story , live music with silent films presented by Silent /Music Revival , archival selections from past James River Film Festivals and much more. Additionally, a screening of critic/ director Kent Jones’ Truffaut / Hitchcock will be held at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on April 13th . Other locations include the Byrd Theatre , VCU’s Grace Street Theatre , Richmond Main Public Library , Visual Arts Center of Richmond , the Bijou Film Center , and the Video Fan .
